With school coming to a close and the new season of summer opening, we have two college student interns joining our team. Please help us in welcoming Jenny and Brittany to the 24th ST family!

Here is a short Q&A we conducted so that you can learn more about these new members of our family:

1. How do you describe yourself?

Jenny: “I would describe myself as a proud, small, brown mujer. I currently study Technical Theatre at Hampshire College (yes, the college with no grades, no tests, and no majors) focusing on finding the intersection of Technical Theatre -- such as lights, sounds, and projections -- and social change. Through this, I study non-white theatre practices that are often forgotten such as Teatro Campesino, Theatre of the Oppressed, Choreo Poetry by Ntozake Shange and much more.”

Brittany: "I'd describe myself as a big ball of fiery passion stuck in a small teenager's body, haha. I’m originally from Arizona, and I graduated from a specialty school called the Center for Research in Engineering, Science & Technology (CREST), where I studied biology but also competed in Acting, Speech & Debate, which is what hooked me into theatre. Now, I'm going into my sophomore year at the University of Southern California as a Theatre major with an emphasis in acting, so I have to be at least a little crazy! If it gives you any idea of the kind of person I am, the three words I used to describe myself in my application to USC were ‘Your Next Trojan.’ "

2. Why did you apply to 24th ST?

Jenny: “I applied to 24th ST because this is the theatre that started it all for me. I started taking the Drama classes, went on to be a mentor for Summer Cool, volunteered as House Staff for weekend shows, and painted faces for Dia de Los Muertos. My mom is now part of the Teatro del Pueblo since its beginning in 2013, and I was amazed to see how aligned it is with the work I began studying at school. 24th ST makes theatre accessible to the communities that need it most. I’m here to learn from the community engagement 24th ST practices, and be part of giving back to the community that raised me and that so deserves to be given access to art. 24th ST is the embodiment of a quote by Luis Valdez I live by, if la raza doesn’t come to the theater, bring the theater to la raza.”

Brittany: "I applied to 24th ST for the summer because I had actually worked as a USC mentor for the After ‘Cool program in the 17/18 Fall and Spring semesters, and I completely fell in love with the theatre. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a theatre. It’s so much more than that. It’s an inspiration, an institution for change that has continued to unite our diverse community through the power of art. I have only lived here in Los Angeles for less than a year now, but 24th ST has welcomed me as if this was always my home. Through programs and events such as After ‘Cool and Día de los Muertos, I have met so many smiling faces and have really felt like I am helping make an impact on the community. I truly feel like I am a part of a family. I couldn’t be more thankful.”

3. What do you want to learn this summer?

Jenny: “I’m here to learn from my community. How can a theatre in a small, predominantly brown neighborhood, answer the needs that the community voices? 24th ST already does an incredible job of being an accessible, friendly environment with a dedication to serve the community it is within, but I want to learn more specific ways 24th ST answers the needs of the community as they come up.”

Brittany: “Gosh, honestly I think Jenny put it perfectly. This summer, I want to learn about the community (especially the individuals) that surround the theatre since I am still so new to the area, and I want to learn how such a small theatre has changed so many lives in just 20 years. Personally, one of my goals is to start my own non-profit and/or theatre company someday, so I can’t think of a better place to learn how to do that than at 24th ST.”

4. What's your biggest dream?

Jenny: “My biggest dream is to empower individuals through theatre. Theatre is already an inaccessible field to many communities, but technical theatre is even more so. I would like to create and run workshops teaching youth how to run lighting, sound, and projection for theatre. I imagine it would include room for youth who are interested in acting, directing, management, and screenwriting as well so at the end of the workshops, there will be a production that the students would have worked on and run from every stage of the process, this way they will feel some agency in the creation of their art.”

Brittany: “My biggest dream is to inspire people, through art and storytelling especially. That’s the big picture -- to make a positive impact on the world in whatever way that I can. Within that, there are so many things I want to do: act as the lead in a big feature film, teach high school/college students English and Theatre, host my own talk show, etc. I have so many years in my lifetime, so what’s stopping me from fulfilling all of those dreams and helping others fulfill theirs with the time that I have? … But, despite me saying all of this, nothing would make me happier than to someday buy my mom a house next to mine.”

Con el ańo de escuela llegando a su fin, tenemos dos pasantes de estudiantes universitarios que se unen a nuestro equipo durante el verano. ¡Por favor ayúdenos a dar la bienvenida a Jenny y Brittany a la familia 24 ST!

1. ¿Como te describirías?

Jenny: "Me describiría como una mujer orgullosa, pequeña y morena. Estudió Teatro Técnico en Hampshire College (sí, el colegio sin calificaciones, sin exámenes ni especializaciones) centrándome en encontrar la intersección del Teatro Técnico, - como luces, sonidos y proyecciones, - y el cambio social. A través de esto, estudio las prácticas teatrales que muy frecuentemente se olvidan, como Teatro Campesino, Teatro del Oprimido, ‘Choreo Poetry’ de Ntozake Shange y mucho más ".

Brittany: "Yo me describiría como una bola de ardiente pasión atrapada en el cuerpo de una pequeña adolescente, jaja. Soy de Arizona y me gradué de una escuela especializada llamada Centro de Investigación en Ingeniería, Ciencia y Tecnología (CREST), donde estudié biociencia, pero también competí en Actuación, Discurso y Debate, que es lo que me enganchó al teatro. Voy a comenzar mi segundo año en la Universidad del Sur de California con un mayor de teatro con énfasis en la actuación, ¡así que tengo que estar al menos un poca loca! Si te da una idea del tipo de persona que soy, las tres palabras que usé para describirme a mí mismo en mi solicitud a la USC fueron 'Tu próximo troyano' ".

2. ¿Porque aplicastes at 24 St?

Jenny: "Aplique al 24 ST porque este es el teatro que empezó todo para mi. Empecé cuando era chiquita tomando clases de Drama, fui mentora de Summer Cool, y era voluntaria para las obras en los fines de semana y pintaba caras para el Dia de los Muertos. Mi madre, Aurora Rodríguez, ahora es parte del Teatro del Pueblo desde su comienzo en 2013 y me sorprendió ver las conexiones con lo que estaba estudiando en mi colegio. 24 ST hace teatro accesible a las comunidades que más lo necesitan. Estoy aquí para aprender de las prácticas de 24 ST de participación comunitaria, y ser parte de retribuir a la comunidad que me crió y que merece estar con el acceso dado al arte.  24 ST es la encarnación de unas palabras de Luis Valdez, si la raza no viene al teatro, traiga el teatro a la raza.”

Brittany: "Aplique al 24 ST para el verano porque trabajé como mentora de la USC para el programa After 'Cool en los semestres 17/18 de otoño y primavera, y me enamoré por completo del teatro. De hecho, ni siquiera lo llamaría teatro. Es mucho más que eso. Es una inspiración, una institución para el cambio que ha continuado uniendo a nuestra comunidad diversa a través del poder del arte. Hace menos de un año que vivo aquí en Los Ángeles, pero el 24 ST me ha acogido como si fuera mi hogar. 3. ¿Que quieres aprender este verano?

Jenny: "Estoy aquí para aprender de mi comunidad. ¿Cómo puede un teatro, en una comunidad chica y predominante gente de color, responder a las necesidades que una comunidad voce? 24 ST ya ha hecho un trabajo increíble en sirviendo a la comunidad en la área, pero quiero aprender mas especifico modas que 24 ST sirve a la comunidad ya sus necesidades.

Brittany: "Vaya, honestamente, creo que Jenny ya lo expresó perfectamente. Este verano, quiero aprender sobre la comunidad (especialmente las personas) que rodea el teatro ya que todavía soy muy nueva en el área, y quiero aprender cómo un teatro tan pequeño ha cambiado tantas vidas en solo 20 años. Personalmente, uno de mis objetivos es comenzar mi propia compañía sin fines de lucro y / o teatro algún día, así que no puedo pensar en un mejor lugar para aprender a hacerlo que en el 24 ST ".

4. ¿Cuál es tu mayor sueño?

Jenny: "Mi gran sueño es te empoderar a las personas con teatro.  El teatro ya es un campo inaccesible para muchas comunidades, pero el teatro técnico lo es aún más. Quiero crear talleres de teatro técnico para enseñar jóvenes cómo utilizar herramientas de luces, sonido, y proyecciones en teatro. Me imagino que incluyera talleres de actuación, dirección, administración, así que al final de los talleres, habrá una producción en la que los estudiantes trabajarían y ejecutarían desde cada etapa del proceso, de esta forma sentirán una cierta agencia en la creación de su arte.”

Brittany: "Mi mayor sueño es inspirar a las personas, especialmente a través del arte y la narración de historias. Ese es mi visión general: para tener un impacto positivo en el mundo de cualquier manera que pueda. Dentro de eso, hay muchas cosas que quiero hacer: actuar como líder en una gran película, enseñar inglés y teatro a estudiantes de secundaria / universidad, organizar mi propio programa de entrevistas, etc. Tengo tantos años en mi vida, Entonces, ¿qué es lo que me impide cumplir todos esos sueños y ayudar a otros a cumplir los suyos con el tiempo que tengo? Pero, a pesar de decir todo esto, nada me haría más feliz que algún día comprarle a mi madre una casa al lado de la mía."
