Meet our New Board President, Nathaniel Zeisler

If we learned anything from our hit production Walking the Tightrope, it's that change can be hard but often leads to new beginnings. So when we said goodbye to our former Board President Leslie Johnson last fall, we also welcomed Nathaniel Zeisler into the role.

Cindy: Tell us how you came to be on the Board of 24th ST.
Nate: I have the great fortune of working with Deb at the Colburn School in DTLA. (Deb is the head of Drama, I work as the Director of Community Engagement and Career Development at the institution) 24th STreet Theatre was one of the first community organizations I visited when I moved to LA with my family six years ago and instantly fell in love with the organization. When Deb and Jay invited me to join the board two years ago, I leapt at the opportunity.
CMJ: How did you find your role at Colburn?
NZ: The position at Colburn was posted in February of 2011. At that point, my wife and I were living in Michigan. Winters in Michigan are so grey and so cold. When I read about the position, we were on week three of sub-zero temperatures and grey skies. The position was a perfect opportunity for me to further explore my interest in supporting the careers of young artists and live in a warmer climate.
CMJ: What’s your favorite way to spend leisure time?
NZ: I love spending time with my family on the weekends, cooking, biking, hiking and enjoying the amazing SoCal weather. (See question above)
CMJ: What’s your favorite memory of Los Angeles?
NZ: I’m supposed to say the birth of my son…… but Tony Bennett at the Hollywood Bowl on August 4th, 2013.
CMJ: How do you wish to see 24th ST grow in the near future?
NZ: I’d love to see the theatre continue to develop a deeper, greater following in the arts education world. There isn’t a better community engagement program out there for the performing arts and for me, it’s less about growing and more about introducing more people to the beautiful, inspiring, and important work they are already doing.
CMJ: What’s your favorite cause outside of 24th ST?
NZ: I am enthusiastic about supporting the lives of young artists and helping them find a path to a sustainable career.
CMJ: What’s your favorite quote?
NZ: “Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal” (not sure who this is attributed to)

Cindy: Cuéntanos cómo llegaste a formar parte de la Junta Directiva del Teatro 24.
Nate: Tengo la gran fortuna de trabajar con Deb en la Escuela Colburn en el centro de Los Ángeles. (Deb es la directora de Drama y yo trabajo como Director de Participación Comunitaria y Desarrollo Profesional en la institución). El Teatro 24 fue una de las primeras organizaciones comunitarias que visité cuando me mudé a Los Ángeles con mi familia hace seis años e instantáneamente me enamoré de la organización. Cuando Deb y Jay me invitaron a ser parte de la Junta Directiva hace dos años, aproveché la oportunidad.
CMJ: ¿Cómo encontraste tu puesto en Colburn?
NZ: El puesto en Colburn se publicó en febrero del 2011. En ese momento, mi esposa y yo vivíamos en Michigan. Los inviernos en Michigan son muy grises y fríos. Cuando leí sobre la posición, estábamos en la tercera semana de temperaturas bajo cero y cielos grises. El puesto fue una oportunidad perfecta para explorar más a fondo mi interés en apoyar las carreras de artistas jóvenes y vivir en un clima más cálido.
CMJ: ¿Cuál es tu forma favorita de pasar el tiempo libre?
NZ: Me encanta pasar tiempo con mi familia los fines de semana, cocinar, andar en bicicleta, ir de excursión y disfrutar del increíble clima del Sur de California. (Ver pregunta arriba)
CMJ: ¿Cuál es tu recuerdo favorito de Los Ángeles?
NZ: Se supone que debería decir el nacimiento de mi hijo ... pero en realidad es Tony Bennett en el Hollywood Bowl el 4 de agosto del 2013.
CMJ: ¿Cómo deseas que crezca el Teatro 24 en un futuro cercano?
NZ: Me encantaría ver que el teatro continúe desarrollando un seguimiento mayor y más profundo en el mundo de la educación artística. No existe un mejor programa de participación comunitaria para las artes escénicas y para mí, se trata menos de crecer y más de presentar a más personas el hermoso, inspirador e importante trabajo que el Teatro 24 ya está haciendo.
CMJ: ¿Cuál es tu causa favorita fuera del Teatro 24?
NZ: Me entusiasma apoyar las vidas de artistas jóvenes y ayudarlos a encontrar el camino hacia una carrera sostenible.
CMJ: ¿Cuál es tu cita favorita?
NZ: "Disfruta la vida, esto no es un ensayo" (no estoy seguro de a quién se atribuye esto)
