Twenty years ago, there was no 24th STreet Theatre. Twenty years ago, the residents of this neighborhood said we need programs for our schools, after school activities for our children, and a place to tell our own stories.
Twenty years later, 24th STreet Theatre has become that place, and so much more. A world-class theatre, one of the largest arts education providers in Los Angeles, and above all, a center for this community. The first kids we worked with are now in their 30’s and have kids of their own.
Twenty years, after all, is an entire generation. Many of the kids who started in our After ‘Cool program went on to become teen mentors, and then college students. Some families have trusted us with their kids, one after another, so we’ve served all of their children in succession.
The Bustillos are one of those families. Edgar Bustillo came to our After ‘Cool program a decade ago. His cousins had been in our program and he had just moved from Honduras, spoke no English and needed a place to feel like he fit in. Today, he’s studying theatre in college and is working with us on our professional stage crew for La Razón Blindada. His cousins, Angela and Bianka, are paid house staffers at our events and his younger cousins, Moises and Junior, are now in After ‘Cool, with a third cousin, Luis, joining as a teen mentor. His aunt [tia] Loren is starring in our community holiday show, La Víspera, and her generation of Bustillos; Nerzy, Angela, Armando, and Jose have been some of our most dedicated volunteers and community advocates. But they are more than that; they are family. We’ve cried with them at Bustillo funerals and cheered with them at Bustillo graduations. That’s what it means for us to be “More than just plays…”
In our 20th year, we’re committed to be here for the current generation and the next one after that. Hace veinte años, no había Teatro 24. Hace veinte años, los residentes de este vecindario decían que necesitaban programas para nuestras escuelas, actividades extracurriculares para nuestros niños y un lugar para contar nuestras propias historias.
Veinte años después, el Teatro 24 se ha convertido en ese lugar, y mucho más. Un teatro de primera clase, uno de los proveedores de educación artística más grandes de Los Ángeles, y sobre todo, un centro para esta comunidad. Los primeros niños con los que trabajamos ahora tienen 30 años y tienen hijos propios.
Después de todo, veinte años es una generación completa. Muchos de los niños que comenzaron en nuestro programa para después de la escuela “After 'Cool” se convirtieron en mentores adolescentes y luego en estudiantes universitarios. Algunas familias nos han confiado a sus hijos, una tras otra, por lo que hemos servido a todos sus hijos en sucesión.
Los Bustillos son una de esas familias. Edgar Bustillo vino a nuestro programa de “After 'Cool” hace una década. Sus primos habían estado en nuestro programa y acababa de mudarse de Honduras, no hablaba inglés y necesitaba un lugar donde sentir que encajaba. Hoy, estudia teatro en la universidad y está trabajando con nosotros en nuestro equipo profesional de La Razón Blindada. Sus primos, Angela y Bianka, son empleados pagados en nuestros eventos y sus primos más jóvenes, Moisés y Junior, ahora están en “After'Cool” con un tercer primo, Luis, quien se une como mentor adolescente. Su tía Loren está actuando en nuestro espectáculo comunitario de navidad, La Víspera y los otros de la generación de Bustillos; Nerzy, Angela, Armando y José han sido algunos de nuestros voluntarios más dedicados y defensores de la comunidad. Pero son más que eso; ellos son familia Lloramos con ellos en los funerales de un familiar y festejamos con ellos en sus graduaciones. Eso es lo que significa para nosotros ser "Más que obras de teatro ...".
En nuestro vigésimo año, estamos comprometidos a estar aquí para la generación actual y la siguiente. Esperamos que se una a nosotros donando para apoyar nuestra misión de involucrar, educar y provocar a nuestra diversa comunidad con excelente educación teatral y artística. Su donación dará fuerza a una generación de artistas, inspirará a los jóvenes contadores de historias e involucrará a la comunidad con las herramientas que necesitan para crear un futuro exitoso.
