Nearly A Year

We knew we were bringing a life-force to 24th STreet last season when we brought the amazing Susanna Hamnett from Canada to perform her dynamite one-woman show, Nearly Lear.  We knew this because we’d already seen her show in Austin and it was among the best Shakespeare we’d ever experienced. We knew it when the same people returned to see her again and again.  We knew it when a neighbor gave her a century-old leather-bound book of Shakespeare’s complete works because she was so blown away by Susanna’s work.  But here’s the real test of Hamnett’s life-forcefulness... the lovely Susanna left us a gift in the lobby: a peace lily.  We’ve tried to have plants in our lobby for 15 years, but none have survived.  Too dark, too dry, too much light, they all die.  Except for Susanna’s.  Almost a year later that lily is still alive and well.  Now this may not seem like a big deal to you, but listen, we have tried, really tried, over many many years to have plants in our lobby because plants ARE life!  And we think theatre lobbies should be full of life too, literally.  But only now have we managed to finally keep a plant alive here. So now that the great Susanna Hamnett has taught us that we can indeed keep life growing in our bustling lobby, naturally we decided to add more plants.  Bigger ones even.  Why not?  Uh... here’s where it gets sad to you vegetarians out there... the first two ficus trees ...are no longer with us.  And the third is... not looking well.  But we won’t give up!  We’ve replaced those two ficus trees with a palm and some other bushy plant because we are now determined to keep life alive.  So now we have a new strategy: the staff has now adopted a plant each.  Luke’s palm is doing fine.  Allegra has the other one, the bushy one, which looks quite healthy.  The lily gets a little love from all of us.  And the last of the dying ficus trees... well we’re hoping Susanna returns soon to give that one some love.  Cuz she sure left some love here when she left the building.  It’s been enough to keep that lily alive for nearly a year.  Susanna is no fool.

Supimos que estábamos trayendo una fuerza revitalizadora al Teatro 24 (24Th Street Theatre) la temporada pasada cuando trajimos a la increíble Susanna Hamnett de Canadá con su explosivo monólogo, Nearly Lear. Lo supimos porque ya habíamos visto su espectáculo en Austin y ha sido para nosotros uno de las mejores monólogos que hemos visto sobre Shakespeare. Lo supimos cuando las mismas personas volvieron para verla una y otra vez. Lo supimos cuando una vecina le regaló un libro encuadernado en cuero de un siglo de antigüedad con las obras completas de Shakespeare, porque quedó muy impresionada con la obra de Susanna. Pero aquí está la verdadera prueba de la contundente fuerza revitalizadora de Hamnett: la encantadora Susanna nos dejó un regalo en el vestíbulo del teatro, un lirio de la paz. Nosotros hemos tratado de tener plantas en el vestíbulo durante 15 años, pero ninguna ha sobrevivido. Demasiado oscuro, demasiado seco, demasiado claro, todas mueren, a excepción de la de Susanna. Casi un año después, este lirio sigue vivo y saludable. Ahora bien, esto puede no parecer gran cosa para usted, pero escuche, lo hemos intentado, realmente lo hemos intentado durante muchos, muchos años; tener plantas en el vestíbulo porque las plantas son vida! Y creemos que los vestíbulos de los teatros deberían estar llenos de vida también, literalmente. Por lo pronto ya hemos logrado mantener viva una planta aquí.

Así que ahora que la gran Susanna Hamnett nos ha enseñado que, efectivamente, podemos mantener algo vivo creciendo en nuestro bullicioso vestíbulo, naturalmente hemos decidido añadir más plantas, más grandes incluso. ¿Por qué no? Mmm... aquí es donde los vegetarianos se van a poner tristes... los dos primeros árboles de ficus... ya no están con nosotros. Y el tercero... no luce muy bien. ¡Pero no nos rendimos! Hemos reemplazado los dos árboles de ficus con una palma y un arbusto porque ahora estamos decididos a mantener la vida viva. Pero ahora tenemos una nueva estrategia, el personal ha adoptado una planta cada uno. La palma de Lucas está muy bien. Allegra tiene el otro, el arbusto, el cual se ve muy saludable. El lirio siempre tiene un poco de amor de todos nosotros. Y al último de los árboles de ficus sigue secándose pero…. bueno, esperemos que Susanna vuelva pronto para que le de un poco de su amor. Porque ella dejó algo de amor aquí en el teatro cuando se fue, y eso ha sido suficiente para que el lirio siga con vida después de casi un año. Susanna no es tonta.
