Alexis, LA County Intern, shares her view of Summer Sounds at Hollywood Bowl
I am the stage manager of Summer Sounds 2013, produced by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with direction by Debbie Devine, artistic director of 24th ST Theatre. We started the summer off with The Fishtank Ensemble, a gypsy band, and just finished up with The Get Down Boys, a bluegrass band. Both shows have been a blast and we just kicked off our last two weeks of performances with Los Pinguos an Argentinian band.
As a stage manager it has been an interesting and great learning experience to work with both world class actors and musicians involved in the same production where they are both the stars.
The beauty of this incarnation of Summer Sounds at the Hollywood Bowl is that children have the ability to follow Emily and Mr. K as they explore the impacts of being both a music enthusiast, and maker. Offering the knowledge that music can be great to listen to at home but nothing is quite like seeing music being made live in front of you. This year Mr. K has taken up the guitar and despite some bumps along the way, is showing the kids that even when something is as hard as learning an instrument it can be overcome with practice and persistence.
Today is Alexis's last day, both at Summer Sounds and 24th ST Theatre. We will miss her!
Many thanks to the LA County Arts Commission for their fantastic Internship program. It pays college students to gain experience and contacts, while aiding arts nonprofits in their summer programs. -CMJ
