Hope / Esperanza

We began 2017 by gathering with Sandra Tsing Loh and patrons and friends in the street in front of our theatre, simultaneously as people gathered in front of 700 other theatres across the country as part of the Ghostlight Project. The purpose was to declare that we will stand up and speak up against injustice in the new year. And we have done our best in 2017 to do just that.
We titled our 20th Anniversary season "Standing Up, Speaking Up". We have also tried to deliver hope in this divisive year. We’ve done that with our art, with our free after-school program, with our teen mentoring program, with our field trip program, with our neighbors, and with our newsletters. We hope it has helped make this vitriolic year a bit more hopeful.
The word Matsiko means hope. We ended the year by presenting the Matsiko World Orphan Choir on December 19th. Orphans from Liberia, Nepal, India, and Peru brought our standing-room-only-crowd to tears with their smiles and warmth. To see these children from all over the world singing and dancing with such love was a beautiful thing. It gave us hope.
It is fitting that we began and ended the year with events intended to offer hope to the public. We are a theatre, and theatres respond to the world around them. That is our job. And we hope that what we’ve done in 2017 has indeed given you a little bit of hope from time to time. We hope you’ve felt a bit more optimistic about the tone of our country because of some of the things we’ve done this year. We hope that you know you’re not alone.
Please know that you have also given us hope, by coming to our events, by giving us standing ovations, by buying tickets, by donating your hard-earned money, by volunteering, by responding to our newsletters, by entrusting us with your children. These things that you have done have helped us keep going. And for that, we just can’t thank you enough.

El Teatro 24 comenzó el 2017 reuniéndose con Sandra Tsing Loh y sus patrocinadores y amigos en la calle frente a nuestro teatro, mientras la gente se reunía frente a otros 700 teatros en todo el país como parte del Proyecto “Ghostlight” (Luz que se deja prendida en los teatros durante la noche para ahuyentar a los malos espíritus). El propósito era declarar que permaneceríamos de pie y hablaríamos en contra de las injusticias en el nuevo año. Y hemos hecho nuestro mejor esfuerzo en el 2017 para hacer precisamente eso. Titulamos nuestra temporada de 20 Aniversario “De pie y haciendo escuchar nuestra voz” ("Standing Up, Speaking Up").
También hemos intentado brindar esperanza en este año divisivo. Lo hemos hecho con nuestro arte, con nuestro programa extracurricular gratuito, con nuestro programa de mentores para adolescentes, con nuestro gran programa de excursiones, con nuestros vecinos y con nuestros boletines informativos. Esperamos que haya ayudado a que este año lleno de amargura y malicia sea un poco más esperanzador.
La palabra Matsiko significa esperanza. Terminamos el año presentando el Coro de Huérfanos del Mundo Matsiko el 19 de diciembre. Los huérfanos de Liberia, Nepal, India y Perú hicieron llorar con su sonrisa y calidez a nuestra público mientras aplaudía de pie. Ver este arcoiris de niños cantando y bailando con tanto amor era algo hermoso. Nos dio esperanza.
Es muy apropiado que comencemos y terminemos el año con eventos destinados a ofrecer esperanza al público. Somos un teatro y los teatros responden al mundo que los rodea. Ese es nuestro trabajo. Y esperamos que lo que hemos hecho en el 2017 les haya dado un poco de esperanza de vez en cuando. Esperamos que se hayan sentido un poco más optimistas sobre el tono de nuestro país debido a algunas de las cosas que hemos hecho este año. Esperamos que sepan que no están solos.
Tengan en cuenta que también nos han dado esperanza, al venir a nuestros eventos, al darnos ovaciones, al comprar boletos, al donar su dinero duramente ganado, al ofrecerse como voluntario, al responder a nuestros boletines de noticias, al confiarnos sus hijos. Estas cosas que ha hecho nos han ayudado a seguir. Y por eso, simplemente no podemos agradecerles lo suficiente.
